Glasgow 1770

The Glasgow Distillery Co. has released three new limited edition single malts into their Experimental Small Batch range. The three new whiskies showcase each of the distillery’s core house styles – unpeated, peated and triple distilled. All have been initially matured in ex-bourbon casks before being finished in a selection of ex-wine barrels.

The Glasgow 1770 White Port Cask Finish uses the triple distilled spirit. It has a lengthy finish in French oak ex-white Port hogsheads after four years in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels. It is released at 53.3% ABV and limited to just 730 bottles. The Glasgow 1770 Amarone Cask Finish uses unpeated double distilled spirit. This has spent five years in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels before a near two year finishing period in ex-Amarone wine barriques from Italy. It is bottled at 53% ABV and limited to 1,060 bottles.

The Glasgow 1770 Passito di Caluso Cask Finish uses the distillery’s peated double distilled spirit. It has a finishing period in ex-Passito di Caluso hogsheads. This is a sweet Italian dessert wine. This is bottled at 57.8% ABV and there are just 690 bottles. All three bottlings are non-chill filtered and of natural colour. They are available now from the distillery website and selected UK retailers with each bottle costing £62.

Rare Find

The prestigious independent bottler of Rare Find has released a trio of ‘teaspooned’ malts. Teaspooned malts were originally conceived to protect distillery identity with a small addition of a secondary malt. This preserves provenance, name and discretion. The three new single cask expressions are taken from the Campbeltown, Highland and Speyside regions. A clue is also offered about each distillery’s identity.

The Rare Find Speyside 22 Years Old comes from a legendary Speyside distillery founded in 1892. It has a 14-month finish in a first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry hogshead. This was sourced from Bodegas Barbadillo in Spain. It is bottled at 46.1% ABV and there are just 133 bottles. Each will cost £175.

The Rare Find Westport 18 Years Old is a ‘teaspooned’ malt from a Highland distillery famed for its tall stills. This has also had a 14-month finish in a first-fill ex-Oloroso sherry hogshead from Bodegas Barbadillo. It is released at 55% ABV and is limited to just 204 bottles. Each will retail for £115.

The Rare Find Campbeltown 10 Years Old is sourced from a distillery that sits just north of Campbeltown’s Kinloch Park. It has been fully matured in a re-fill ex-bourbon hogshead. It is bottled at 46.7% ABV and the cask has yielded just 303 bottles. Each will cost £65. All three bottlings are non-chill filtered and of natural colour. They will be available via specialist UK retailers from April 16.

The Epicurean

Douglas Laing & Co, the family-owned independent bottlers, have announced a new addition to The Epicurean blended malt range. The Epicurean Peated Edition represents a first for the brand by introducing some gentle peat smoke. As with all editions of The Epicurean, the whisky is created using only Lowland single malts and sits within the company’s wider Remarkable Regional Malts range.

The Epicurean Peated Edition is released at the natural cask strength of 50.5% ABV and is both non-chill filtered and of natural colour. The Lowland source of the peated single malt component is not revealed in the press release. This small batch release consists of just 1,800 bottles. These are available now via selected specialist whisky retailers in the UK and other selected world markets. A bottle will cost £50/ €57.

“The Peated Edition marks an exciting chapter for The Epicurean. We were keen to explore how peat could complement rather than overpower the Lowland style. The result is a whisky that retains its trademark freshness and citrus lift, now enriched with earthy smoke, warming spice and a refined ashy character.
