Five Whiskies Perfect for Spring

For whisky drinkers Spring signals a transition to refreshing and uplifting whiskies to suit the longer, warmer days.

Five Whiskies Perfect for Spring

Spring is always a time for renewal and fresh optimism. For whisky drinkers it can signal a transition from the heavier sherried or peated styles of Winter to something more refreshing and uplifting to suit the longer, warmer days.

We have selected five whiskies from our archives that fit this bill. All are core products and readily available from regular retailers. They are vibrant and expressive, and perfect for a fresh Spring day, whether sipped neat or mixed in an elegant cocktail.

Compass Box Artist Blend

Scotland | Blended whisky | 43% ABV | ex-bourbon, ex-Palo Cortado sherry & French oak casks | £40

Compass Box Artist Blend Scotch Whisky

One of the most uplifting and vibrant blended whiskies that we have come across, and one that offers great value for money. Compass Box kicked off the artisan blending scene and are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year. The Artist Blend is inspired by the city of Edinburgh.

A fabulous blend that leads with aromas of floral Spring meadows and candyfloss. Red apple, fresh cut grass and malted cereals evolve and are supported by vanilla, sherbet lemon and creamy coconut notes. This bright whisky can be served neat or even straight from the freezer to further enhance its bright nature.

Glenmorangie The Original 12 Years Old

Highlands, Scotland | Single malt whisky | 40% ABV | ex-bourbon barrels | £40

Glenmorangie The Original 12 Years Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

The classic Highland single malt got an age increase from 10- to 12 Years Old last year and the transition was seamless. Glenmorangie’s tall stills, the highest in Scotland at five metres, produce a deliciously light and elegant style that is loved the world over. This makes it a must for our Spring selection.

Sweet notes of honey, butterscotch and vanilla custard are aplenty and well supported by luscious green apple, peach and coconut. 100% ex-bourbon cask maturation is difficult to beat and offers no hiding place for the spirit. Glenmorangie shines in these conditions and this classic expression does not disappoint.

Hibiki Japanese Harmony

Japan | Blended whisky | 43% ABV | American white oak, Mizunara oak & ex-sherry casks | £80

Hibiki Japanese Harmony Whisky

The Japanese are synonymous with Spring and the Sakura festival, the annual celebration of the cherry blossom season, is famous the world over. The Hibiki range of blended whiskies seem to almost bottle this feeling up and the Japanese Harmony is perfect for Springtime.

A delicious marriage of casks gives a fresh and floral blend of golden syrup, peach and orange blossom combined with further notes of white chocolate, sultana and honey. An elegant and warming woody spiciness adds wonderful depth and complexity. Delicious when sipped neat, over a large chunk of ice or in a highball cocktail.

Kingsbarns Coaltown

Lowlands, Scotland | Single malt whisky | 46% ABV | American oak ex-peated whisky casks | £46

Kingsbarns Coaltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Peat can still have its place as the warmer temperatures and longer days arrive. Especially when it is done in such a subtle and delightful way as this. Kingsbarns were one of the early pioneers of the Fife craft whisky boom and using ex-Islay whisky casks to mature their spirit is another innovative step.

The result is that you get a more subtle peat influence that has a greenness and freshness to it. Candied lime and green capsicum notes mingle with heather honey and vanilla toffee. Everything is wrapped up in a gentle and medicinal peat smoke that wisps around every characteristic, making the peat smoke easily accessible.

Yellow Spot 12 Years Old

Ireland | Single pot still whiskey | 46% ABV | ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and ex-Malaga fortified wine casks | £80

Yellow Spot 12 Years Old Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

The elder sibling of the popular Green Spot and part of the wider Spot Family range of single pot still Irish whiskeys. It has been matured in a unique combination of ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and ex-Malaga fortified wine casks. The expression was relaunched in 2012 after disappearing from sale in the 1950s.

Classic pot still flavours of dried grass, earthy cereals and a pinch of peppery spice lead the way. They are well supported by lovely, sweet notes of golden syrup, milk chocolate and honey. Then come tropical fruits and a distinct citrus tang – think of lemon zest and bitter orange oil. An absolute classic that leaves you wanting another sip.
